Italian Molinari leads in Ireland

Friday 15 May, 2009 09:32:17
Francesco Molinari of Italy was the opening day leader of the 3 Irish Open at County Louth Golf Club in Baltray, Drogheda.

After shooting a course record nine-under-par 63, the 26-year-old found himself one shot ahead of Sweden's Johan Edfors at the close of play.

Yesterday saw some impressive performances by British players, who will be looking to impress as the European Tour heads to venues in England and Wales over the coming weeks.

Welshman Jamie Donaldson and England's Nick Dougherty, Robert Rock and Oliver Wilson were all three strokes off the lead, as was Scotland's Paul Lawrie.

They were joined by Finland's Roope Kakko and Indian player Shiv Kapur in the upper echelons of the leaderboard.

The large Irish contingent looking to put in a decent display in front of their home fans have, as yet, failed to impress - although Shane Lowry is five under par.

Dubliner Padraig Harrington, who has won three Majors in the last two seasons, ended the first day one over par.
